The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has rejected suggestions that it is financed with government funds, saying its operations and preparations for the 2027 elections are being supported through contributions from members, aspirants, stakeholders and other supporters.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, made this known in a statement on Monday while addressing questions about the party’s finances and its process for selecting candidates.
Director said the NDC, being a newly established political party without elected officials occupying public offices, had put mechanisms in place to raise funds needed to sustain its activities and prepare for the forthcoming elections.
He explained that the party’s constitution permits members, aspirants, stakeholders and members of the public to contribute financially to its activities.
“As a new party without a president, governors, ministers, or other holders of public office, the task of building and sustaining the party posed an existential challenge,” Director said.
He added that the NDC therefore decided to seek financial support from aspirants, stakeholders and members of the public, noting that such contributions were permitted under the party’s constitution.
According to the spokesperson, levies and other contributions are paid into designated party bank accounts and handled by the appropriate organs.
Director also dismissed allegations that the party’s National Leader, Seriake Dickson, sought or collected money from aspirants for personal purposes.
“All funds were duly received, receipted and accounted for in line with global best practices,” he said.
The NDC spokesperson assured Nigerians that the party would account for its finances in accordance with the Electoral Act and guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He said fundraising was necessary for the party to organise its structures, mobilise supporters and prepare candidates across the country ahead of the 2027 polls.
Director stressed that the party was not being financed from government treasuries, insisting that its funding comes from members, stakeholders and supporters.
Addressing concerns over candidate selection, he said the NDC’s presidential and vice-presidential tickets were made available without payment, adding that the same approach applied to a number of other positions within the party.
He reaffirmed the leadership’s commitment to transparency, due process and fairness in its internal affairs.
Director also urged the media and members of the public to verify information before publishing or sharing reports concerning the party’s finances and activities.
He said the NDC remained focused on expanding its structures and building a broad-based political movement ahead of the 2027 general elections.
