Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso has disagreed with Vice President Kashim Shettima over his criticism of the statistics and economic proposals presented by the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Shettima had described Obi as “the master of bogus statistics and incoherent economic prescriptions” during the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council in Abuja on Wednesday.
However, Kwankwaso, who is the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), defended Obi during an appearance on Channels Television’s *Politics Today* on Thursday.
Kwankwaso said he had examined figures cited by the former Anambra State governor and found most of them to be accurate.
He acknowledged that mistakes could occur when people present figures or speak publicly but maintained that such errors did not justify Shettima’s broad criticism of Obi’s use of statistics.
Kwankwaso’s comments come amid political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, with leading political figures increasingly exchanging views over economic policies and the records of their opponents.
During the interview, Kwankwaso also expressed concern over the omission of the NDC’s Kano State governorship candidate, Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, from the list of candidates released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the 2027 elections.
He said the party had written to the electoral commission over the omission, but had yet to receive a response.
Kwankwaso expressed hope that INEC would address the matter and correct the list to reflect the party’s candidate.
The omission has raised concerns within the NDC as preparations for the next general elections continue.
