2027: Kwankwasiyya challenges INEC over missing Kano NDC candidates

Kwankwasiyya gathering in Kano

The Kwankwasiyya Movement has demanded an urgent explanation from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the omission of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Kano governorship candidate, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, and his running mate, Mustapha Rabi’u Kwankwaso, from the final list of candidates for the 2027 election.

The movement, in a statement issued on Sunday by its spokesperson, Habibu Mohammed, urged INEC to clarify the circumstances surrounding the omission while calling on NDC leaders to pursue all available legal and administrative remedies within the stipulated period.

The development has raised concerns among the movement’s supporters, particularly because Gwarzo had emerged as the NDC’s governorship candidate ahead of the Kano election.

Kwankwasiyya maintained that Gwarzo registered with the party within the required period and said it was unaware of any court case or judicial order that could explain why the names were missing from INEC’s final list.

“These circumstances make it imperative for INEC to provide a clear explanation and ensure that the matter receives the attention it deserves,” the statement said.

The movement also drew attention to Section 32(2) of the Electoral Act 2026, which it said provides a 14-day window for a political party to notify INEC in writing, with an affidavit, when the name of its nominated candidate is missing from the published list.

It urged the NDC leadership and the candidates’ legal representatives to examine the provision and act promptly, adding that the party should assemble documents showing registration, nomination, submission of candidate particulars and official acknowledgements.

The group said it would not prejudge INEC’s explanation or the outcome of any legal proceedings, stressing that any claim of an administrative error must be supported by verifiable records.

It also warned supporters against confrontation and the spread of unverified information, urging them to continue their political activities lawfully while the party seeks a resolution.

The movement called on INEC to clarify the matter without unnecessary delay and reaffirmed its commitment to constitutional democracy, electoral justice and the rule of law.

INEC’s published Kano governorship list does not include Gwarzo, his running mate or an NDC candidate. The commission has not publicly explained the omission in the list itself.
