The battle for the 2027 Kano governorship election has gathered momentum as JAGABA/ABBA Students’ Mandate 2027 has thrown its weight behind Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s re-election bid.

The Kano State chapter of the students’ group said its endorsement was informed by what it described as the governor’s impressive performance in infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture, water supply and youth empowerment.

In a statement by its convener, Comrade Nafiu Yunusa, the group urged Kano residents to support Yusuf for a second term, insisting that his administration deserved continuity to consolidate its achievements.

Yunusa said the governor had recorded over 1,508 development projects worth more than ₦928 billion as of July 2026, with 799 completed and 709 ongoing across the state’s 44 local government areas.

He said over ₦118 billion had been invested in five-kilometre road projects in 38 local government areas, while about ₦169 billions had gone into urban renewal.

The group also applauded the rehabilitation of the Challawa and Tamburawa water treatment plants and the restoration of the Goron Dutse Reservoir to address water shortages.

On education, Yunusa said the Yusuf administration had recruited 16,000 teachers and absorbed 2,000 volunteer instructors into permanent service.

He added that nearly one-third of the state’s 2024 and 2025 budgets was allocated to education, while tuition fees in state-owned tertiary institutions were reduced by 50 per cent.

Other interventions, according to him, included payment of students’ examination fees and the revival of foreign postgraduate scholarships, which had benefited over 2,000 students.

The group further cited the renovation of over 300 primary healthcare centres, recruitment of more than 2,000 health workers and provision of free caesarean section services for pregnant women.

In agriculture, it said the government had supported over 477,000 farmers, distributed fertiliser worth billions of naira and embarked on a ₦16 billion irrigation project at Jakara Dam.

Yunusa also listed the empowerment of 1,130 graduates with start-up kits, provision of start-up capital to thousands of small business owners and distribution of 7,158 goats to 2,386 women across the 44 local government areas.

He said the initiatives demonstrated the administration’s commitment to economic empowerment, job creation and improved living conditions.

The group declared that Yusuf had fulfilled 90 per cent of his campaign promises, describing his re-election as necessary to sustain the development drive.

“The choice before the people of Kano in 2027 is simple: continuity and consolidation, or a return to a past that neglected the many to serve the few,” Yunusa said.

The students’ group therefore called on Kano residents, particularly youths and students, to rally behind Yusuf, insisting that his administration deserved another opportunity to complete its development agenda.
