The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the final list of governorship candidates for the 2027 elections, setting the stage for contests across several states.

The list, published on Saturday, October 10, contains candidates’ names, political parties and ages, giving voters a clearer picture of those seeking to lead their states.

In Lagos, the All Progressives Congress (APC) is represented by Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour as its candidate. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate listed is Adedeji Olugbemiga Doherty.

In Oyo State, the APC candidate is Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, while Taofeek Adegboyega Adegoke represents the ADC. Abimbola Adekanmbi is listed for the Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM), while Abdulrahman Oriyomi Hamzat is the candidate of the Accord Party.

In Abia, Alex Chioma Otti appears on the Labour Party (LP) ticket, while Kalu Kalu Agu represents the ADC and Eric Chinemeucheya Opah is listed for the APC.

For Rivers State, Kingsley Ogundu Chinda is listed as the APC candidate, while Dumo Owukori Lilu-Briggs represents the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). Samuel Soni Ejekwu is listed for the PDP.

In Kaduna, the APC candidate is Uba Sani, while Isa Mohammed Ashiru represents the ADC. In Kano, the APC has Yusuf Abba Kabir on its ticket, while Ibrahim Ali Amin is listed for the ADC.

The list also features candidates from several smaller political parties, reflecting the range of parties seeking governorship seats in the affected states.

However, the release has not been without controversy. Separate reports on the final list said INEC omitted the PDP’s governorship candidate in Ogun State, Oladipupo Adebutu, and his running mate. In Gombe, former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami was also absent from the final list after previously appearing on the provisional list.

The publication of the candidates’ names is a key step towards the 2027 polls, although disputes over omissions and candidate eligibility may still require clarification from the commission and affected political parties.
