A group, National Intelligence Watch, has called on security agencies to investigate an alleged plot to recruit foreign fighters from Cameroon, Chad and Niger to unleash violence in Benue State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group warned that the alleged plan, if substantiated, could threaten public safety, aggravate existing security challenges and undermine the credibility of the forthcoming elections.
The alarm comes amid the protracted political rivalry between Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, which has continued to generate political tension in the state.
In a statement signed by its chairman, Matthew Apine, the organisation expressed concern over allegations that armed groups from neighbouring countries could be recruited to foment violence and destabilise the state ahead of the governorship election.
It urged security agencies to establish the facts surrounding the claims, identify individuals or groups found to be involved in any plot to sponsor violence and ensure that those responsible were brought to justice.
National Intelligence Watch also expressed concern over claims that criminal activities could be exploited to discredit the state government and influence the outcome of the election.
The group, however, did not identify those allegedly behind the plot or provide evidence linking any political figure to the claims.

The group stressed the need for security agencies to remain professional and impartial, warning against the use of state institutions to settle political scores or intimidate opponents.
It further called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and relevant security institutions to strengthen coordination to ensure that the 2027 elections were conducted in a peaceful and credible atmosphere.

National Intelligence Watch urged all parties involved in the political disputes in Benue to exercise restraint and refrain from inflammatory statements or actions capable of escalating tensions.
It maintained that protecting democratic institutions and guaranteeing public safety were essential to ensuring that residents could participate freely in the electoral process without fear or intimidation.
