As the 2027 general elections approach, a civil society group known as Power In The Street (PITS) has commenced a grassroots mobilization drive, training about 120 youths on how to leverage personal computers to monitor electoral processes and ensure transparency.

The initiative, led by Ms. Dabira Olayinka, sponsored by Amova Foundation, aims to equip the younger generation with technological tools to independently track votes and hold political actors accountable.

Speaking at the conclusion of the programme, prominent activist and facilitator, Shina Loremikan stated that the onus lies entirely on the Nigerian youths to determine their political future.

He decried the passive attitude of local youths compared to their global peers, pointing out that youths in France had been protesting infrastructural decay for two weeks despite enjoying free education, while young people in Spain are currently demonstrating for better housing and social inclusion.

“The reverse is the case in Nigeria,” he observed, urging the youths to take their destiny in their own hands. He strongly advised them to draft a ‘charter of demands’ to serve as an article of faith with political aspirants at all levels, allowing citizens to rigorously track electioneering promises once candidates assume office.

Corroborating his stance, the group’s leader, Olayinka, criticised the cyclical excuses made by elected officials.

She warned that politicians who are currently utilising their roughly 90-day campaign window would likely return in the future to complain that a four-year tenure is too short to deliver meaningful impact.

The organisers, therefore, called on young Nigerians to look beyond campaign rhetoric and use their numerical strength to vote wisely in the upcoming general elections.
