Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has called for unity and sustainable development as the nation heads into the 2027 election year.
Governor Otu made the call on Saturday in Calabar during the 7th edition of the Calabar Walkathon, organized by the Healthy Billionaires Fitness Club.
The governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Anthony Enoh, said the theme for this year’s edition, “A Walk for Unity and Sustainable Development,” was timely.
“In our seventh edition, and of course this seventh edition is for unity and sustainable development. We need to sustain the dividends of what this administration is doing, and we can all do this together,” he said.
He commended the organizers for sustaining the initiative since 2020 and thanked partners and fitness clubs for their support.
Chairman of the Planning Committee, Mr. Samuel Usoro, said the annual walkathon fuses exercise, health with advocacy for a social cause.

“What we try to achieve is to fuse exercise, sports and walking into advocacy for a cause. The cause we picked this year is unity. It’s an election year.
People will be divided in terms of political affiliations, religious affiliations, tribe and sometimes it gets very messy”, he said
Usoro said this year’s walk covered about 12 kilometers along the Carnival Route, with participants logging over 20,000 steps.
Assistant Secretary of the club, Hope Obeten, said the club founded during COVID-19 in 2020 has grown beyond fitness into social impact.
The impact over the years include payment of medical bills for indigent patients and outreach to motherless homes.
He said the club used the platform to preach peace ahead of the 2027 elections.
