Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has assured Nigerians that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) will ensure that the 2027 general elections are peaceful and free of violence.
Disu gave the assurance at the weekend in Lagos during a grand reception organised by old students of St Gregory’s College, Lagos, in honour of the IGP and other distinguished alumni who were recognised for their contributions to the nation.
The IGP, a former student of the school, was honoured with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the colourful ceremony.
Speaking at the event, Disu said the police were determined to replicate the success recorded in previous elections and ensure that the 2027 polls were conducted peacefully.
“We are very determined to ensure a violent-free and peaceful election in 2027. We have done it before and we will do it again.
“If you look at the recent Ekiti State election, it was very peaceful. Everybody commended the Nigeria Police Force. We just finished the Osun election. Everybody thought that it would be violent and that people would die. We surprised everybody. Not one death was recorded,” he said.
The IGP disclosed that the police had already begun preparations for the 2027 elections, including training and sensitisation of senior officers who would participate in the electoral security operations.
“We just finished one of our conferences, where we lectured all our Commissioners of Police and everybody that will be participating in the election,” he said.
Disu assured Nigerians that the police would do everything within their powers to guarantee a peaceful electoral process.
“We give you our word that the elections will go peacefully and very well,” he assured.
Speaking on the Lifetime Achievement Award bestowed on him by his alma mater, Disu described the recognition as one of the most significant honours of his life.
“If I say that it is the biggest day in my life, I may not be lying, because the best award anybody can get in the whole world is the one given to you by your alma mater.
“St Gregory’s is a great school; in fact, the best secondary school in the world. And I am sure that you will agree with me that there are two schools in the world: St Gregory’s and the others,” he said jokingly.
The police chief noted that he was honoured alongside other distinguished Nigerians, including former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Olayemi Cardoso.
“Now I have been given this award together with another great Nigerian, Olayemi Cardoso, and many others.
“It shows something so great and thoughtful of the organisers to have selected us to receive this award. We will forever be grateful to our school,” he said.
Disu further described the bond among former students of the institution as unique, saying that the Gregorian spirit encouraged members to support one another wherever they found themselves.
“St Gregory’s College is such that everywhere you go, you will meet a Gregorian. A Gregorian is ever ready to assist a fellow Gregorian,” he said.
The IGP also urged younger generations to uphold the spirit of unity and excellence associated with the institution.
“I will tell them never to forget the Gregorian spirit. They have a spirit. Listen to your elders and ensure that you come out the best in everything you do,” Disu advised.
