James Faleke has thrown his weight behind Obafemi Hamzat as the next governor of Lagos State, signalling early alignment within the All Progressives Congress (APC)  ahead of the 2027 election cycle.

The lawmaker, who represents Ikeja Federal Constituency, made his position public in a post on X, urging party loyalists across Lagos to close ranks as preparations for the primaries gather pace.

“Good evening all. As we prepare for Party primaries next month, I urge all our supporters in Ikeja Federal Constituency and Lagos State to support Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat as the next Governor of Lagos State from 2027–2035 IJN. Amen!” he wrote.

Faleke’s endorsement is not coming in isolation. Within APC circles, there are already strong indications that Hamzat is being positioned as a consensus candidate, a move aimed at avoiding internal friction in a state where party unity has often determined electoral outcomes.

Party insiders say the thinking goes beyond Lagos. Similar alignments are said to favour Olamilekan Adeola for Ogun and Sharafadeen Alli for Oyo, pointing to a broader South-West strategy being quietly shaped ahead of the next general elections.

The groundwork for these decisions reportedly followed high-level consultations with President Bola Tinubu in Lagos, where party leaders weighed electability, structure, and grassroots appeal before narrowing down preferred options.

Those meetings, attended by key figures including Femi Gbajabiamila and several South-West governors, were described by insiders as detailed and deliberate, reflecting the importance of getting the succession plan right in strategic states.

For Lagos, Faleke’s early declaration sets the tone. While the formal race is yet to begin, the signals are already clear party heavyweights are moving to shape the outcome long before the first ballot is cast.
