The Federal Government has proposed a timetable for Nigeria’s 2027 external examinations, with results from four major examination bodies expected in August to allow candidates to begin tertiary institution admission processes in September.
The proposal is part of the education reform agenda being implemented by the Ministry of Education under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), led by the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa.
Under the proposed schedule, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) will conduct the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) from March 15 to 25, 2027, with results expected within the same month.
The plan is part of the Federal Government’s education reform agenda under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), which seeks to improve coordination, efficiency and educational outcomes.
To coordinate the examination calendar, the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, held a meeting with heads and representatives of examination bodies at the Federal Ministry of Education headquarters in Abuja.
The meeting examined ways to synchronise examination dates, reduce timetable clashes and ensure that results are processed early enough to support candidates’ transition from secondary schools to tertiary institutions.
According to the proposed schedule, the National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) will run from April 1 to May 14, while the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) is scheduled for May 11 to June 18.
The National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) examination is proposed to take place between June 1 and July 5, while the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS) examination is scheduled for June 10 to July 9.
The government is targeting August 2027 for the release of results from NECO, WAEC, NABTEB and NBAIS examinations. The proposed timeline is intended to allow eligible candidates to proceed with tertiary admission processes from September.
The Ministry of Education said it would continue consultations with the examination bodies to encourage compliance with the proposed dates and strengthen accountability in examination administration.
The harmonisation effort forms part of the reforms being pursued by the administration of President Bola Tinubu through NESRI, with the government reaffirming its commitment to improving the education sector and facilitating timely access to tertiary education.
The examination dates remain proposed timelines as the ministry continues its engagement with the relevant bodies.
