Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Babachir Lawal has called on Nigerians concerned about insecurity and economic hardship to support the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential ticket of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso in the 2027 general elections.
Lawal made the call at his unveiling as a member of the party by its national leader, Seriake Dickson, and other senior members of the party in Abuja on Tuesday.
The former SGF, who has publicly expressed support for an Obi-Kwankwaso presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 election, said the country’s challenges required Nigerians to rally around what he described as a patriotic objective.
His latest remarks come after he previously argued publicly that the Obi-Kwankwaso combination offered a stronger electoral proposition than either politician running separately.
Speaking at the event, Lawal said Nigerians facing insecurity, economic difficulties, hunger and other social challenges should consider supporting the NDC ticket.
“Anybody, anybody at all in Nigeria that has the interest of our country at heart and has sympathy for the suffering that is going on in our country, enabled by insecurity, economic degradation, hunger, ignorance and disease, will have no choice but to join a party that presents Peter Obi and Kwankwaso,” he said.

The NDC adopted Obi as its presidential candidate and Kwankwaso as his running mate at its special convention in May 2026. The ticket has since been listed by INEC among the presidential and vice-presidential candidates for the January 16, 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections.
Lawal urged what he described as “sensible” and “patriotic” Nigerians to work with the NDC to achieve the objective of electing the duo.
“Every sensible Nigerian, every patriotic Nigerian ought to understand this, and it’s now convincing to partner with NDC to see to the fulfilment of this very, very noble patriotic objective of installing Peter Obi as the president, and Rabiu Kwankwaso as the vice president in 2027,” he said.
He said he looked forward to the conclusion of the electoral process in 2027, when, according to him, Nigerians would celebrate having achieved what he described as the right outcome for the country and future generations.
“And so, by the grace of God, by the grace of our leader, Nigerians at large, we look forward to May 29, 2027, where we celebrate that we’ve done that which is proper, we’ve done that which is good for the country, and we’ve done that which is good for generations yet unborn,” Lawal said.
He prayed for the support and resources required to pursue the objective, adding: “We pray to God to give us the wherewithal to deliver on this very noble and precious objective.”
