Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar on Saturday hosted former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso in Abuja in a meeting that has further fuelled talks of a possible opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Both men were key contenders in the 2023 presidential race, won by Bola Tinubu. Atiku, who ran on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, finished second, while Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party secured a strong showing, particularly in Kano.
Confirming the meeting, Atiku described it as a courtesy visit, noting that discussions centred on national issues.
“This evening, I received the former Governor of Kano State… Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on a courtesy visit. We had a robust discussion on the state of the nation,” he said.
Despite the formal tone, the meeting comes at a time of heightened political activity within opposition circles, with increasing speculation that alliances are being quietly shaped ahead of the next electoral cycle.

There are also reports suggesting that Kwankwaso may be weighing a possible move from the NNPP to the African Democratic Congress, a development that could alter the configuration of opposition politics.
The latest engagement follows an earlier gathering hosted by Kwankwaso in Kano, where he received notable political figures, including Peter Obi, Seyi Makinde and Seriake Dickson during the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.
That meeting, like the latest in Abuja, has been widely interpreted as part of ongoing consultations among opposition leaders seeking common ground.
While no formal alliance has been announced, the frequency and calibre of these engagements point to a gradual but deliberate effort to reshape the political landscape ahead of 2027.
