The Anambra State government has suspended all traditional rulership and town union government elections ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development was contained in a statement signed by the Head of Department (HoD), Town Union Matters, Tony Onyekomelu, on behalf of the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, a copy of which was made available to the media.
The statement explained that the suspension was due to the political campaigns and the general elections scheduled for January and February 2027.
“Accordingly, all communities whose elections fall within December and February are advised to reschedule and conduct such on or before November 2026 and handover would be on exact date of the tenure expiration.
“While those which fall between January and February 2027 are advised to reschedule for Easter 2027,” Onyekomelu said.
He enjoined all the communities concerned to take note of the directive, be guided, and ensure strict compliance.
Anambra State Commissioner of Police, State Director of DSS, Special Adviser to Governor Charles Soludo on Community Security and all LGA Chairmen were also put on notice.
