The vice-presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has described the party’s governorship flag bearer in Delta State, Great Ovedje Ogboru, as an asset to the growth of the state, stating that victory of its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, will consolidate his emergence as governor.

Speaking at a town hall meeting in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area, yesterday, as part of his electioneering campaign to Delta State, Amaechi noted that securing Ogboru’s victory in 2027 rests on Deltans to ensure their votes are protected, not leaving your polling units after voting. Who will protect your vote?

He said, “Don’t be allowed to be rigged. After voting wait till results are announced instead of rushing home to do nothing, then you are the problem of all ADC candidates. If you make a mistake this time, it means that Ogboru will again not be sworn in.”

Amaechi said the political strategy involved delivering ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar in Delta State, which will also translate into Ogboru’s victory as governor of the state. A vote for Atiku is a vote for Ogboru.

The former Rivers State governor also urged ADC candidates for the Senate, House of Representatives and State Assembly to work for Atiku’s victory to secure their own, rather than rely on appointments from an incoming federal government.

He said he agreed with Atiku, who said no candidates will be given appointments if they do not win their constituency, urging all ADC candidates to defend their votes and ensure that the party records victories from the presidential election down to the state legislature.

On the economy of the country, Amaechi criticised the Federal Government’s removal of fuel subsidy, which he said had triggered what he described as “spiral inflation”.

According to him, higher transportation and energy costs had affected farmers and businesses and eventually pushed up the prices of food, healthcare, education and other essential services. He said an ADC government would introduce a production subsidy for locally refined petroleum products as part of efforts to reduce fuel prices and ease the cost of living.

“When the price of food comes down, the price of rice will come down, the price of the bus will come down, the price of the barber will come down. Everything will come down. ADC administration would tackle corruption and revive critical infrastructure, particularly rail and maritime transportation.

“If we win, we will build a new seaport in Warri,” Amaechi said, adding that the administration would also support the completion of the proposed Bonny/Brutu seaport. He urged supporters to defend their votes at polling units, stressing that the responsibility for ensuring victory for Ogboru and other ADC candidates could not be left to party leaders alone.

Earlier, Delta State ADC governorship candidate, Chief Great Ovedje Ogboru, welcomed Amaechi to Delta and described the meeting as an opportunity for the people to hear directly from the party’s national leadership on its plans for Nigeria.

Ogboru urged the audience to listen to Amaechi’s proposals and question him on how the ADC intended to address the economic challenges confronting Nigerians.

The ADC Delta State chairman, Hon George Timinimi, also pledged the commitment of the state chapter to Ogboru’s governorship bid and the party’s other candidates, saying the party had undertaken consultations across the 25 local government areas and three senatorial districts.

He said the party would commence an aggressive, issue-based campaign across communities, with the objective of taking its message of economic recovery and a production-driven economy to voters.

Timinimi declared that the state chapter was prepared to mobilise for the ADC’s presidential, governorship and legislative candidates, saying, “Delta State will be an ADC state.”
