Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has taken responsibility for his error that led to Zimbabwe’s dramatic late equaliser during their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Tuesday.

Victor Osimhen had given Nigeria the lead in the 74th minute following a cross from Ola Aina.

However, Zimbabwe restored parity through Tawanda Chirewa’s stoppage-time strike.

Chirewa ghosted past Troost-Ekong before slotting the Warriors’ equaliser under goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

Troost-Ekong, who won the Most Valuable Player award at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, was criticised on social media for allowing Chirewa to dribble past him too easily.

Taking to X, the former Watford defender wrote: “Responsibility taken.

“Same target ahead. We will do it together! Nigeria Super Eagles.”

The result leaves Nigeria’s qualification hopes in jeopardy.

The Super Eagles are in fourth place with six points, trailing Group C leaders South Africa.
