A group, the Democratic Reformers, has accused some presidential aspirants of the All Progressives Congress, APC, particularly of revealing their anti-Buhari mindset with attacks on the Vice President and a cynical dispute of the administration’s successes.
According to the group, since the Vice President’s formal declaration for the office of president, allies of the named aspirants have allegedly sponsored various attacks on aspects of his declaration speech, particularly his promise to consolidate the gains of his principal in the areas of infrastructure, social investments, and the repositioning of government institutions to deepen the rule of law and serve the people.
Citing articles and content deliberately assigned to unverifiable authors to conceal their real source that have sprung up in media outlets aligned with the other aspirants, including Tla national newspaper which is reportedly owned by one of the aspirants, The Democratic Reformers pointed out the mockery of the Vice President for highlighting gains of the administration and areas to consolidate, hinting further that the same people doing the mockery were responsible for the vicious media attacks that have dogged the Buhari-administration for years.
The group in a statement signed by its Lagos State Coordinator, Aare Musibau Lamidi said: “The Janus-faced characters who praise the President to high heavens to his hearing but secretly sponsor media attacks discrediting and undermining his administration have finally revealed themselves.”
“Since Vice President’s widely-praised declaration speech, in which he put on show his unmatched charisma and profound understanding of the direction the nation has to travel in the next four years, these characters have focused their criticism on his pledge to build on the successes of his principal because they think the administration has been a failure.”
“In one of such articles planted in the aspirant’s owned newspaper, President Buhari was accused of great incompetence in the area of security and strengthening of the rule of law, with cynical references to the END SARS protest and the suspension of the Twitter service, despite Mr. Tinubu’s known support for both moves, including his infamous criticism of the END SARS protesters who, among other things, sought his dethronement as the emperor of Lagos.”
“Perhaps the most shocking revelation came from a member of the cabinet directly responsible for some of the administration’s infrastructure drive but has refused to defend President Buhari against attacks from naysayers, instead sponsoring some of the attacks himself in a most cynical attempt to take down the aspiration of the Vice President.”
“This was the same individual caught on tape ridiculing the President before a gathering of young people and journalists as a man “who does not read” and is incapable of managing the affairs of the country.”
“It is a reality of politics that no single administration can solve all of the country’s problems. It is for this reason that continuity is a necessary prerequisite for sustained progress and all-encompassing growth. Any discerning citizen can understand that an acknowledgment of progress in some areas, and a promise to build on that progress, does not amount to a denial of shortcomings in others nor does it indicate a lack of will to address those shortcomings.”
“This is what most Nigerians understand, especially those who have benefited from some of the administration’s most successful policies. It is unfortunate that those who ought to offer clarity and promote the administration are not only distancing themselves from President Buhari at this critical moment but also parroting the talking points of the opposition party to tarnish his reputation and sell his eight-year stewardship as a failure.”
“With or without their support, President Buhari’s legacy is secure. But these characters must be identified for who they are and their duplicitousness should not be rewarded with loyalty. A bad turn deserves another.”
