From Femi Folaranmi, Yenagoa

The governorship candidate of the Labour Party in the November 11 governorship election in Bayelsa state, Mr Udengs Eradiri has challenged the Bayelsa State government over its preparations to mitigate the effects of the approaching flooding in the state.

Eradiri who unveiled his Peoples Education, Agriculture and Power (PEAP) Development Agenda in Yenagoa, slammed the state government for what he called its unpreparedness.

According to him there is nothing on ground to show that the present administration is desirous of mitigating the 2023 flooding after the nasty experience suffered by Bayelsans in 2022.

“Flood is coming, look at the environmental abuses that is going on. What role are we playing as leaders to ensure our environment is conducive for us to live in as a people? It is not enough that we complain.  What action are we taking?  The funds that have been made available by United nations , Europeans Union and the rest, you can benefit from it but if you don’t take action they are watching the kind of leadership in your state and that’s why they don’t release money.

“The last flood, over 5,000 families were relocated by UNICEF in Kaduna because they saw what the government was doing. We want to take leadership that will be responsible and responsive to the issues that affect our people,” he said.

Speaking further on his ambition, he said he wants to have a social contract with Bayelsans through participatory governance.
