The Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of North West zone of Nigeria,Mr. Hafiz Mohammed-Inuwa, has urged the police personnel to be neutral during their duties in the general elections.
Inuwa stated this while interacting with newsmen shortly after addressing officers of the Kebbi State Police Command at the command’s headquarters, Birnin Kebbi ahead of Saturday elections.
He charged the police personnel to strictly adhere to the laws, principles and rules guiding their conduct before, during and after the elections.
According to him, “the Police are supposed to be apolitical, meaning, that we belong to nobody and we belong everybody just as the President said. Our duty is to ensure that the laws of this land is being followed strictly and adhered to with a view to ensuring that we create an enabling environment for peaceful, transparent and successful conduct of elections across Nigeria.
“The police are not to interfere with the electoral process but to maintain law and order while the citizens exercise their civic responsibility.”
The DIG noted that the police personnel were not masters,saying that, “we should know that we are servants of the people but irrespective of being servants of the people, Nigeria as a nation, we give it the highest priority.
“Anybody who tries to go against the laws of this country will be dealt with, including any uniform officers. We are not to create any problem but to solve them and anybody trying to breach the electoral laws or the laws of the land, definitely he/she will face wrath of the law.”
The DIG advised politicians to note that “politics is not a do-or-die affair” but an opportunity for all Nigerians to choose credible leaders of their choice without intimidation, harassment or compulsion.
