The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has referred two medical doctors, Denis Shattima and Hauwa Shehu, both from the Angelic Care Hospital, Garki, Abuja, to its disciplinary tribunal for their alleged role in the death of a nine-year-old girl, Disney Nwanne, in Abuja.
The deceased girl’s mother, Faith Nwanne, had accused the two doctors of professional misconduct/negligence, which allegedly resulted in the death of her daughter on February 4, 2020, hence, she approached the MDCN for further investigation and possible sanctions.
Nwanne, in an affidavit dated October 5, 2020, requested the MDCN to carry out further investigation and possibly take punitive measures against the two doctors whom she accused of being responsible for the death of her daughter through their negligence.
She had, in a 13-paragraph affidavit to the MDCN, alleged that poor handling and treatment from the doctors was responsible for the death of her daughter on February 4, 2020, at the Angelic Care Hospital, Garki, Abuja, in circumstances that she suspected to be professional negligence by the medical personnel at the health facility.
The deceased mother, perhaps, due to the circumstances of her daughter’s death, also demanded a report about the possible causes of the death, more so, as a nurse allegedly sprinkled water on her daughter, while she was a patient at the facility after the said nurse had administered a ‘suspicious injection’ to her late daughter.
Nwanne also stated that to her surprise, the Chief Medical Consultant, Shatima, produced two reports afterwards dated February 20 and 28 2010, respectively, for an incident that happened on February 4, 2020.
Meanwhile, MDCN Registrar, Tajudeen Sanusi, confirmed the petition against the two doctors, and explained that a prima facie case of misconduct in a professional respect has been established against them and the matter referred to the Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal (MDPDT) for further adjudication.
He promised that members of MDPDT would carry out thorough investigation on the matter and serve justice to all parties.
