2 die in Kano-Zaria Expressway crash

Accident

From Desmond Mgboh, Kano

Two people have been confirmed dead in a road crash involving a tipper truck loaded with bitumen and a Mercedes-Benz car at Dangi Underpass along the Kano-Zaria Expressway.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kano Sector Command, said the accident occurred at about 5:50 p.m. on Tuesday.

The crash involved a Howo tipper truck with registration number RMG 332 XA and a Mercedes-Benz C180 with registration number ABJ 783 GB.

According to a statement by the FRSC, the tipper truck suffered brake failure, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The truck subsequently slid backwards and collided with the Mercedes-Benz travelling behind it.

The FRSC said four adult males were involved in the crash, with two of them dying on the spot.

Rescue operatives of the corps and other emergency responders evacuated the victims to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.

The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Idris Mohammed Lawal, commiserated with the families of the deceased and prayed for the peaceful repose of their souls.

Lawal warned motorists, transport unions, construction companies and fleet operators against poor vehicle maintenance, particularly the failure to inspect and service critical components such as brakes and tyres.

He urged motorists to practise defensive driving, maintain safe following distances, remain alert to changing road conditions and ensure their vehicles were roadworthy before embarking on any journey.

The sector commander stressed that regular vehicle maintenance, responsible driving and strict compliance with road safety regulations were essential to preventing avoidable road crashes.
