• Say continuity needed to consolidate ongoing projects, reforms
Seventeen traditional rulers from the Awkunanaw cultural zone of Enugu State have thrown their weight behind Governor Peter Mbah’s re-election, adopting him as their “sole candidate of choice” for the 2027 governorship election.
The monarchs, drawn from communities in Nkanu West and Enugu South local government areas, said their decision followed consultations and an assessment of developments in the state under the Mbah administration.
Their position was contained in a communiqué issued by the Council/Forum of Ndi Igwe from the Awkunanaw Extraction of Nkanu following their deliberations on Monday.
The royal fathers said they considered the administration’s programmes in infrastructure, education, healthcare, security, economic development, revenue generation and transportation before arriving at their decision.
They argued that continuity would provide an opportunity for ongoing projects, reforms and other development initiatives to mature and deliver their intended benefits.
“Following extensive deliberation and consultation among the Royal Fathers, we hereby state, in unison and without equivocation, our collective support for the re-election bid of His Excellency, Barr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, as Governor of Enugu State,” the communiqué stated.
Going further, the monarchs declared: “We stand together in support of His Excellency, Barr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah as our sole candidate of choice for the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Enugu State.”
They said the endorsement represented the collective resolution of the traditional rulers rather than the position of an individual monarch.

“Our endorsement is based on our assessment of the direction of governance, the development witnessed across the State, and our conviction that continuity will allow the administration to consolidate its programmes and further advance the State,” they said.
The latest declaration adds to previous endorsements of Mbah’s second-term bid by Awkunanaw groups. Earlier in the year, political and community leaders from the clan publicly backed his re-election during a rally in Akegbe-Ugwu.
The monarchs said that, as custodians of their communities, they would continue to articulate the concerns and aspirations of their people and engage the state government on issues affecting peace, development and wellbeing.
They also pledged continued engagement with the government to ensure that the interests of their respective communities were communicated through appropriate channels.

Other signatories were Igwe Felix Nwobodo Ani of Ndiagu Obuofia Awkunanaw; Igwe Bernerd Nwoye of Akwuke Awkunanaw; Igwe Cyprian Ekwomchi of Akwukwu Uwani Awkunanaw; Igwe John Ngene Omedoaku of Amechi Awkunanaw; Igwe Chinedu Nwobodonyia of Ugwuaji Awkunanaw; Igwe J.A.
