By Rita Okoye
The Onigboya collection by Modamuse Collective represents a celebration of Nigerian heritage, particularly the Yoruba tradition. The collection was unveiled by the creative directors Ibiloye Samuel Tunde and Olayiwola Gamaliel Fasuyi, who are co-owners of the brand Modamuse Collective. The duo described this collection as nothing short of creating pieces that embody a rich cultural narrative while delivering style and confidence to elevate the wearer’s unique sense of fashion.
The term Onigboya is a Yoruba language that, when translated, means “The Confident One.” As the name implies, the collection is geared towards making a bold statement, featuring a culture-centric fashion line that blends traditional Yoruba elegance with contemporary design.
This collection is made with various fabrics like Aso oke, Ankara, Adire, Cashmere, and plain and patterned Cotton fabrics. Each fabric choice reflects the designers’ commitment to honoring Nigerian heritage while offering modern sophistication. The collection boasts a range of designs, which include agbada, senator wear, kaftan, danshiki, shirts, and trousers or pants.
Tunde and Fasuyi both have remarkable energy that fuels their creative processes. Each designer brings their unique strengths to the table, making their collaboration truly special. Fasuyi, known for his meticulous attention to detail and innovative design techniques, ensures that each piece exudes sophistication and refinement. His expertise shines through in the intricate detailing on each garment in the collection. From the delicate embroidery to the precise patterns, Fasuyi ensured that these pieces elevated the overall elegance of the outfits.
On the other hand, Tunde is a master of fabric manipulation and garment construction. He is responsible for selecting the fabrics used, as his choice of fabrics also reflects his Nigerian heritage. His expertise in garment construction includes the precise stitching, the tailored cuffs, and the overall structure of each piece.
Tunde’s expertise also extends to his cultural storytelling ability, ensuring that the collection not only looks stunning but also carries a profound sense of identity and pride. Their skills greatly complement each other, bringing the collection to a remarkable success and showcasing its beauty and significance on a global stage.
One of the traditional Yoruba attires is the generally known Agbada outfit. This outfit is a flowing, wide-sleeved robe with black embroidery accents on the front. The inner garment known as Buba is a long-sleeved tunic paired with a matching pant referred to as Sokoto, which altogether provides a cohesive look. The Buba and Sokoto can be worn independently, while the Agbada can also be worn with other pieces in the collection. This outfit and its striking black embroidery exude confidence and refinement, which makes it a statement piece worn for any occasion, signifying status and respect.
The Kaftans, Senator Wear, and Danshiki all have intricate detailing, which adds beauty to the overall look of the garments. One notable kaftan in the collection features a long-sleeved tunic paired with matching trousers. The tunic has intricate, colorful embroidery around the neck and a pocket, which adds a vibrant touch to the overall appearance. Fasuyi used geometric patterns for this embroidery, which makes it visually appealing to the taste of contemporary men.
The shirts in the collection are sewed in long-sleeved and short-sleeved styles with minimally intricate designs, which provide the wearer with versatile options for gracing different occasions as well as comfort and ease of movement. One notable piece is a plain shirt that has a small, subtle embroidery on the chest, adding a subtle detail to an otherwise plain outfit. The simplicity of the design makes it versatile for casual and formal occasions. Some shirts and trousers made with Ankara fabric are also fused with plain cotton materials which exemplifies the seamless fusion of tradition and contemporary elegance, making it a standout choice for any wardrobe,
With the launch of “The Onigboya” collection, Tunde and Fasuyi have masterfully woven the rich tapestry of Yoruba culture into contemporary fashion, garnering widespread positive acclaim from many fashion enthusiasts. The dynamic duo emphasized that the collection was born out of their passion and deep respect for culture, and to better meet the needs of a wider audience, they reimagined the traditional Yoruba attire for the modern man who embraces his heritage with pride while maintaining a stylish and contemporary look. Through this innovative collection, Tunde and Fasuyi have created a legacy that continually elevates Nigerian fashion to new heights and inspires future generations to wear their culture with confidence and dignity.
