Wife of Ebonyi State Governor, Mrs Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, has organised free cervical cancer screening for 1000 women in the state to curb the spread of cancer-related ailments among womenfolk.

Flagging-off the programme in Elinwovu General Hospital, Abakaliki Local Government Area of the state, she said the outreach was geared towards creating awareness and sensitizing the womenfolk on the importance of health screening exercise.

The office of the governor’s wife organised the programme in collaboration with her pet project, Better Health for Rural Women, Children and Internally Displaced, (BERWO), Medical Women Association and Alex-Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki.

According to her, the exercise with the theme: “Ending cervical cancer within a few generations, with the goal of raising cervical cancer and HPV vaccination awareness,” would provide opportunity for women to screen, and detect the early stage of cervical cancer.

The timely care it would provide, she added, would reduce morbidity and mortality from cervical cancer.
