1 killed, three arrested as Ebonyi Varsity SUG election turns bloody

The Ebonyi State police command has arrested three students of the state university, EBSU for allegedly killing a student during the Student Union Government (SUG) election of the institution.

The three students were said to have fired gunshots to disperse the crowd during the election when a bullet hit the deceased student who was rushed to the hospital where he was confirmed dead.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu confirmed the incident.

Ukandu said the suspects would be arraigned after investigation.

“The Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested three suspects in connection with an attempt to disrupt the announcement of results during the Student Union Government (SUG) election at Ebonyi State University.

“The incident occurred while the election results were being announced, when the suspects allegedly fired a gunshot to disperse the crowd.

“Unfortunately, the bullet struck a student, who was immediately rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, for medical attention.

“Swift response by police operatives on ground led to the arrest of the following suspects; Lawrence Azubuike ‘m’, Ibe Kenneth ‘m’, Njoku Joshua ‘m’ and the recovery of a locally made pistol used in the act.

“The suspects are currently in custody and will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.

“The Commissioner of Police, Ebonlyi State Command, CP Adaku Uche-Anya fdc assures members of the public of the Command’s unwavering commitment to maintaining peace, law, and order across the state”, he said.
