Gunmen have allegedly abducted 10 students and three adults along the Awon–Kachia Road in Kachia Local Government, Kaduna State.

The incident occurred on April 26 when armed men intercepted a vehicle conveying students returning to school after the weekend, along with other passengers heading to Kachia.

A source said three of the students escaped and narrated how the victims were abducted.

One of the students, Purity Babangida, reportedly died while attempting to escape from the attackers.

Those abducted include Augustina Muntari (SS2), GSS Gumel; Happy Muntari (JS2), GSS Gumel; Favour Tanimu (JS2), GSS Kachia; and Patience Joseph (JS2), GSS Kachia.

Others are Peace Irimiya and Bishara Irimiya of St. John’s School, Kachia; Irimiya Galadima (driver); Fatu Danladi; and Laraba Caleb.

“This unfortunate development is a major setback to the ongoing campaign for girls’ education in northern Nigeria, where insecurity remains a serious concern,” the source said.

As of press time, the abductors had not contacted the victims’ families, while the Kaduna State Police Command and the Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs had yet to issue official statements.
