In an impassioned call to action, Nigerian youths have been urged to embrace the critical responsibility of building trust as a cornerstone for a sustainable future. This message was conveyed by governance expert, Dr. Joe Abah, during the opening plenary of the 8th Babcock International Model United Nations (BIMUN) conference, held in Ogun State.

Abah emphasized that the reconstruction of trust, both within and between nations, is vital to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and ensuring a future where everyone thrives. “Rebuilding trust is essential for addressing global challenges. We must work collectively to create a sustainable future for all,” he asserted, driving home the importance of unity and cooperation in tackling the world’s most pressing issues.

The week-long BIMUN conference brought together over 100 delegates from across Africa to engage in deep and meaningful discussions on global challenges under the theme: ‘Agenda 2030: Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity towards sustainability for all.’ The gathering provided a platform for young leaders to deliberate on critical issues such as climate change, human rights, security and economic development, while honing their skills in debate, resolution drafting and collaborative problem-solving.

Mr. Samuel Chiemela, executive director of BIMUN, highlighted the conference’s pivotal role in nurturing the next generation of leaders. “BIMUN serves as a platform for young individuals to develop the skills and confidence necessary to become global change-makers. By empowering these young minds, we invest in a brighter future for Africa and the world,” he remarked.

Beyond the rigorous committee deliberations, BIMUN also offered delegates opportunities for cultural exchange, fostering connections and friendships among participants from diverse backgrounds. Workshops and panel discussions led by industry experts provided valuable insights, further enriching the experience for the young leaders.

As the conference drew to a close, the delegates left with renewed commitment to contribute to a more just, equitable, and sustainable world. The organizers of BIMUN expressed their confidence in the ability of these young leaders to drive positive change and shape a brighter future for all.

For nearly a decade, BIMUN has been at the forefront of empowering young individuals to engage in meaningful dialogue and develop practical solutions to global challenges. This year’s conference once again demonstrated the potential of youth leadership in shaping a sustainable future through trust-building and global solidarity.
