A businesswoman, Mrs Rebecca Omokamo Godwin-Isaac, has demanded the unconditional release of her husband and some of her staff allegedly arrested and detained by officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for two weeks.

The woman said her husband and the staff have been on the  EFCC detention without trial, thus violating Section 35 of the Nigeria constitution which prescribes that no law enforcement agency has the right to detain someone on a civil matter more than 48 hours.

The woman, in a statement yesterday, explained that her husband, Isaac Ishaku Yusuf and the staff were allegedly arrested and detained by the  EFCC officials without investigation on allegation of land grabbing for two weeks.

She thus called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and prevail on the EFCC to allow the rule of law to take its course in ensuring the release and prosecution of her husband and staff if need be.

“It is 13 days and still counting that my husband and several workers have been detained by the EFCC operatives without prosecution or releasing them .

It’s a clear contravention of section 35 of Nigeria’s constitution and an infringement on their right to freedom,” she said.

She condemned the undue detention, and called on the EFCC to respect the rule of law instead of otherwise, affirming that her husband and others had satisfied all bail conditions required by law to release them and yet they are denied bail.

“It is expected of the EFCC to either release them or charge them to court in accordance with the law than keeping them for as long as they want. The law is supreme and must be obeyed to the latter no matter the circumstances,” she demanded.
