The Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) Nigeria has applauded the recent appointments of two accomplished women to high-ranking positions in Ghana and Nigeria’s maritime sector, describing the developments as a triumph for gender inclusion and leadership in the region.
In Ghana, Madam Jemilat Mahamah has been appointed Chairman of the Board of the Ghana Maritime Authority, a role that positions her at the forefront of maritime policy and governance in the country. WISTA Nigeria praised the move, highlighting its significance for women across the maritime industry in Africa.
“We are immensely proud of Madam Mahamah’s achievement,” said Dr. Odunayo Ani, President of WISTA Nigeria.
She added: “Her leadership promises bold reforms and strategic progress for Ghana’s maritime sector.” Dr. Ani also noted that the appointment is a major source of pride for WISTA Ghana, WISTA Africa, and the global WISTA community.
In Nigeria, Ms. Iroghama Ogbeifun’s appointment to the board of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) by President Bola Tinubu, was equally celebrated.
As the CEO of Starzs Investments and a prominent member of WISTA Nigeria, Ogbeifun brings deep industry expertise and a strong record of leadership to the NIMASA board.
“Her appointment is a powerful affirmation of women’s capacity to lead and transform the industry,” Dr. Ani remarked, stressing that it reflects a growing recognition of the role women play in maritime development.
WISTA Nigeria described both appointments as landmark achievements that underscore the progress being made toward gender-balanced leadership in the maritime domain. The association reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the rise of women in maritime through advocacy, collaboration, and professional development.
“These milestones are more than symbolic, they demonstrate what is possible when competence meets opportunity,” said Dr. Ani.
