The Wigwe University in Isiokpo, Rivers State, has offered scholarship awards to 100 outstanding students as it takes off academic activities next month.
This, according to the acting Vice Chancellor, Marwan AI-Akaidi, is to provide exceptional opportunities for students who aspire to become the next generation of fearless leaders.
“These merit-based scholarships have been designed to support students with exceptional academic achievements, leadership and entrepreneurship capabilities, and a passion for continuous learning. “By alleviating the financial burden of higher education, this scholarship will provide a conducive environment for scholars to thrive, innovate, and make meaningful contributions to society,” he said.
He said to honour the legacy of the late Herbert Wigwe, the university remains committed to upholding its vision of establishing a world-class institution that meets global standards in Nigeria.
“Wigwe’s dream was to create a nurturing and innovative academic environment that fosters intellectual growth, critical thinking, and societal impact. As the university commences its journey, it strives to continue its legacy by offering unparalleled educational experiences and fostering a community of scholars who will lead with integrity and excellence,” he said.
AI-Akaidi said the initiative equally emphasises the university’s commitment to providing quality education to all, regardless of their financial background, in line with the vision of founder, Wigwe.
“By investing in our students, we are not only shaping the future of our institution but also nurturing a generation of fearless leaders,” he said.
He said to qualify for the scholarship, applicants must have selected Wigwe University, as their first choice and achieved a minimum score of 170 in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
“Additionally, candidates must ensure their qualifying results are uploaded to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) portal. Candidates awaiting their O’level results are advised to upload them to JAMB as soon as they are available.
“Candidates that did not choose Wigwe University as their first choice but meet the cut-off mark, may apply provided they make the university their first choice on the JAMB portal before the closure of the change of institution process,” he said.
He, however, clarified that the scholarship is not available to direct entry candidates.
“Interested students are encouraged to apply through the university’s portal by visiting the portal and completing the admission application. After that, candidates should proceed to the scholarship page and click on ‘Apply Now’. Successful candidates will be notified by the first week of September. The application deadline is August 26, 2024,” he said.
