From Olanrewaju Lawal, Birnin Kebbi
The Emir of Zuru, Major General (retd) Mohammed Sani Sami Gomo II, has declared that the people of Zuru Emirate will fully support Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State if he seeks re-election in 2027. The Emir made this pledge during a visit by the Commissioner of Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed BK, to his palace on Sunday, 6 April 2025.
The Emir attributed this support to Governor Idris’s efforts in advancing infrastructure development across Zuru Emirate and Kebbi State. He remarked that no governor in the state’s history had achieved as much for Zuru Emirate in eight years as Idris has in under two. “Before Idris’s assumption of office, Zuru Emirate had given up hope of any solution to the insecurity that had bedevilled the area, resulting in the loss of many lives, livestock, and farmlands to marauding bands of bandits,” he said.
He recalled how farmers had abandoned their lands, markets had shut down, and young men were kidnapped and enslaved by bandits. Yet, since Idris took office, he added, the governor tackled these challenges head-on. “Today, all farmers have returned to their farms, leading to a bumper harvest last year,” the Emir noted.
The Emir also praised the re-awarding of the long-neglected Koko/Zuru road contract to three capable companies. “The construction of that road alone is enough good work for the people of Zuru Emirate to reward the governor with their total support,” he said. He further commended Idris for ensuring equitable development across all parts of Kebbi State, urging him to view his re-election as assured.
In response, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed, who led journalists on a working tour to the palace, thanked the Emir for his steadfast support and valuable advice. He said the prayers and cooperation of the people have guided Governor Idris in his mission to develop Kebbi. “More dividends of democracy by the Dr Idris administration are in the pipeline. What’s required is for the people to continue to support the government by cooperating with it to make Kebbi better for all residents,” he said.
The Commissioner highlighted that in less than two years, Idris has accomplished what once seemed impossible. “It is looking like this is just the beginning of many good things to come,” he added, crediting divine intervention for providing Kebbi with a leader of patriotism, courage, and vision. Souvenirs typically given to visitors were presented to the team through the Commissioner.
