Northern Elders Forum (NEF), has resolved to vote any presidential candidate that its policy align with that of the region.
It also, stated that it would support the next administration to address major challenges that inhibit the growth, development, peace and security of the North and Nigeria.
The elders did not categorically adopt any presidential candidate.
The declarations were adopted at the end of the 10th anniversary of NEF headed by Prof Ango Abdullahi, yesterday in Abuja.
The event had in attendance Senate President, Ahmad Lawan; Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed; New Nigeria People’s Party standard bearer, Rabiu Kwankwaso, who was represented by the party’s National Chairman Prof Rufai Ahmed Alkali; Vice Presidential Candidate of Labour, Yusuf Baba-Ahmed among others.
Part of the resolutions read: “To vote for candidates in accordance with our individual and group interests;
“Commit to supporting the conduct of credible elections and a peaceful transition to the next elected administration;
“Resist any attempt to subvert our democratic system by any unconstitutional means;
“Respect the popular will expressed by credible elections, irrespective of the origin and identity of the winner;
“Support the next administration to address major challenges that inhibit the growth, development, peace and security of the North and Nigeria;
“Engage the rest of Nigeria as respected equals, and continue to demand that the rights of Northerners will not be abused, sacrificed or neglected by any government or group.”
