From Okey Sampson, Umuahia

Chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Adolphus Wabara, has accused President Bola Tinubu of trying to turn Nigeria into a one-party state, which he said would boomerang, as the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), will soon implode.

Senator Wabara who spoke against the backdrop of the recent defection of the party’s vice presidential candidate in 2023, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and a good number of PDP chieftains in Delta State to APC, however said there was no cause for alarm in the PDP.

The former Senate President while noting that the PDP would miss the decampees, added the defection would not deplete the fortunes of the party in 2027.

He rather described the development as “a blessing in disguise. APC will soon implode as a result of the defection of PDP members coming to displace loyal APC faithful who have laboured to build their party.”

Wabara added: “The PDP will laugh last because very soon, there will be implosion in the APC. Those people joining the APC will soon want to displace the party members who have built the APC over the years. The displaced APC members will look for where to go, and they will simply come over to the PDP.”

Showing no sign of surprise at the defection of the PDP bigwigs to APC, Wabara noted that decampment in politics, is not unusual.

He attributed the action to a number of factors including choice, loss of confidence in the electoral process, and desperation for second term in office.

“It was expected, and I think we should expect more. But there’s nothing to worry about. That’s politics. We long expected such defections and we know the reason: Some are doing so for second tenure, and some for protection.”

The PDP BoT Chairman declared that despite the defections, the 2027 polls would not be a smooth sail for the ruling APC contrary to false hope by its leadership.

The former Senate President expressed confidence that the PDP would come out stronger, declaring that the remnants would rebuild the party into a dominant force ahead of 2027.
