The United Patriotic People of Nigeria (UPPN) has raised concerns over alleged attempts by the Sokoto State government, led by His Excellency Ahmed Aliyu, to interfere with the regulations governing the palace of HRH Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Sultan of Sokoto.
In a strongly worded statement, the UPPN called on Governor Aliyu and his administration to refrain from any actions that could create tension in the state and across the country. “The Sultan of Sokoto is a leader to every Muslim in Nigeria, and any interference with his office affects all Muslims in the country,” the statement emphasized.
The UPPN highlighted the dissatisfaction among Nigerians regarding political interference in matters concerning traditional and religious leaders. The organization urged both Governor Aliyu and the Sultan to resolve any differences amicably. “The government of Ahmed Aliyu should not allow what is happening in Kano to repeat itself in Sokoto,” the statement warned.
The UPPN also reminded Governor Aliyu of the Sultan’s constitutional rights, including his freedom to support any legally recognized political party, politician, or organization. “As a Nigerian, the Sultan has the right to openly or secretly support any legally recognized political party or certified politician and belong to any legally registered organization or association,” the statement affirmed.
The UPPN urged Governor Aliyu to focus on fulfilling his campaign promises by developing Sokoto State and addressing the challenges faced by its residents. The statement called for strategic initiatives to combat banditry and other forms of insecurity in the state. “We urge Governor Ahmed Aliyu to take his eyes off HRH the Sultan of Sokoto and concentrate on improving the welfare of the people of Sokoto,” the UPPN stated.
