An investigation into the fatal shooting of a teenager in Imo by a Catholic priest has been launched by the State Police Command.
A source who witnessed the incident disclosed that it happened during the crossover night mass celebration at St Columbus Amaimo Ikeduru Council Area on December 31, 2024.
Different variations of the account were given by other sources; while some allege that the teenage boy was shot because he threw a banger firework (also called knockout) inside the church, others say the shooting was an accidental discharge and that it was not an intentional act by the suspect.
Confirming the tragedy, the Public Relations Officer of the Imo Police Command, Henry Okoye, revealed that an investigation has begun.
“Yes. A detailed investigation has been initiated to ascertain the remote facts surrounding the incident. Further development on the case will be communicated in due course,” Okoye said.
The Amaimo community is reportedly mourning the tragic incident which cast a dark cloud on the celebrations preceding the new year.
