• Describes Abuchi-led outgoing SUG Executives as the best

From Felix Ikem, Nsukka

Prof Charles Igwe, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) has urged Enoch Utazi the new Students Union Government (SUG) President of the university to emulate the good performance of his immediate predecessor, Micheal Abuchi.

Igwe said this in Nsukka on Wednesday during the inauguration of new UNN SUG executives elected on October 31.

He said that the administration of Abuchi remained the best in the history of UNN-SUG in the recent past because of his good leadership skills, achievements and cordial relationship with the University management.

He commended Abuchi for erecting two buildings that contained ten room toilets facilities each, as well as buying two Sienna buses to be used to convey physically challenged students in UNN to lectures.

“This is the first time we are seeing this kind of achievement from SUG in this university, the story of SUG in UNN would be incomplete without mentioning the administration of Abuchi.

“The management is happy with the Abuchi-led SUG administration for conducting themselves peacefully while discharging their duties and would like the newly inaugurated administration led by Utazi to emulate the good performance.

“This Sienna buses for the physically challenged students will go a long way in reducing the suffering encountered by them in going to lectures and other things that concern their academics,” he said.

He reminded the new SUG executives that their aim of coming to university was academics and should not allow their involvement in student unionism to undermine their academic performance.

“I charge new SUG executives to be serious with their academics, be role models to other students and agents of positive change,” he said.

The VC commended Prof. Edwin Omeje, the dean of student affairs for dedication to duty as well as for ensuring that SUG elections were transparent, credible, free, and fair by using biometric election.

“My administration will continue to give infrastructures, staff, and students welfare a priority,” Igwe said.

In a remark, Omeje applauded the VC for his non-intervention and non-involvement in the SUG electoral process which had shown him as a true father and a democrat.

“The VC doesn’t in any way as he ensures that those appointed as members of the University of Nigeria Electoral Commission (UNECO) are men and women of proven integrity and character

“This is the fourth time UNN is using biometrics to conduct SUG elections and all are free and fair, an indication that UNN can conduct national elections in the country with ease.

“I remind all executives inaugurated today that to whom much is given much is expected, you must be fair in all your dealings.

“You should always know corruption destroys both the leaders and the governed, so see corruption as leprous cancer that must be avoided at all cost,” he said.

In his valedictory remark, Abuchi expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor, Dean, and his executive members for their maximum support that made his tenure successful.

“I thank the Vice-Chancellor and his management team, the Dean of Student Affairs, and other principal officers of UNN for their advice, constructive criticism, and unflinching support throughout my tenure.

“It was because of their support and advice that motivated me and my executives to undertake and complete some laudable projects, as well as maintain peace and order among the students on the campus,” he said.

Abuchi said further that some of the achievements of his administration include, the construction of two buildings in two strategic locations in UNN, each containing ten rooms with toilet facilities, the purchasing of two Sienna vehicles dedicated to the movement of physically challenged students on the campus, scholarship award to 10 indigent and physically challenged students, ensuring peace and good leadership with the management.

“We acquired the 2 sienna vehicle for the physical challenge students because of what they are passing through going and coming back from lectures, so the vehicle is dedicated to their services for 24 hours, our target is to improve their welfare as well as give them a good sense of belonging,” he said.

In his acceptance speech, Utazi promised that his administration would give student welfare priority as well as maintain a good relationship with the university management.
