• Says govt gives only N10m subvention
From Taiwo Oluwadare, Ibadan
Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVD), Academic, Aderonke Baiyeroju, has lamented the lack of fund for school utility bills at the University of Ibadan (UI).
In her statement, yesterday, Baiyeroju said the university spends over N100 million on electric utility bills every month, while the government only provides N10 million as a monthly subsidy.
Baiyeroju made the comment while receiving equipment donated by the pioneer volunteers of Diamond FM, a radio station owned by the university. The donated items, which amounted to a sum of N2 million, included computers, webcams, headphones, and other equipment.
The DVC thanked the volunteers and emphasised the importance of giving back to the university. She also highlighted the financial challenges facing the institution, stating that the university is not doing well financially. She said the university spends over N200 million every month on utilities such as water, electricity, and diesel, while the government’s monthly subsidy of N10 million is insufficient.
Baiyeroju called for more groups and individuals to support the university financially and expressed hope that Diamond FM would go further in its efforts to improve. She emphasised the need for additional funding to meet the university’s utility expenses, as the current allocation is inadequate.
