President Bola Tinubu, in a tribute he personally signed, has paid tribute to his long time alley and a dedicated public servant, Alhaji Surajudeen Ayilara, who passed on July 1, 2024.
According to the President, despite his frail health, Ayilara remained steadfast in his commitment to serving Lagos State and humanity until his last breath.
He noted that Ayilara’s life was marked by remarkable achievements, hard work, endurance, and perseverance. President also noted that his late friend was selfless, loyal to his work, and a dedicated public servant.
He added that Ayilara’s unwavering commitment to serving Lagos State and humanity knew no bounds.
President Tinubu, recalled their paths crossing when he was elected governor of Lagos State. Ayilara served as Director of the Abuja Liaison Office and later as Sole Administrator of Agege Local Government under Colonel Buba Marwa’s military administration. One of his earliest assignments was to complete the abandoned Lagos Liaison Office in Abuja, which he accomplished within six months.
Ayilara’s career in the Lagos Civil Service, the President said was distinguished by his exceptional leadership skills and dedication. He rose through the ranks and eventually became a Permanent Secretary, excelling in matters of protocol and administration.
After retiring from public service, Tinubu appointed him as his Special Adviser. He continued to serve in this capacity even after Tinubu’s tenure as governor.
Throughout Tinubu’s political journey, including the formation of their progressive political parties Action Congress and Action Congress of Nigeria, the President said Ayilara was a constant presence and h played a key role in registering both parties in Abuja and was an authoritative voice on those events.
A true progressive at heart, the President said Ayilara believed in their shared vision for Nigeria. He was an integral part of Tinubu’s presidential campaign team, visiting numerous campaign stops with him and serving as his liaison with influential political figures. His primary responsibility was managing their campaign accounts during the intense campaign period.
Tinubu described Ayilara as a trusted associate, friend, brother, and dependable partner. He expressed his deepest gratitude for Ayilara’s services to Lagos State and his family, as well as his unwavering support throughout his political career. Tinubu noted that many of their achievements would not have been possible without Ayilara’s guidance and partnership.
He noted Ayilara was equally devoted to his family and friends, spending most of his life serving others and giving generously to those in need. He was a humanitarian who embodied the spirit of selflessness.
Tinubu concluded by saying that he will never forget Ayilara, nor will Lagos State or anyone who knew him. He extended his condolences to Ayilara’s loving wife and children, as well as to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the people of Lagos State on the loss of this outstanding public servant.
