The President of Indigenous Igbo Youth Congress (IIYC), has implored President Bola Ahmed Tinubu not to delay the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
Speaking with Saturday Sun, Echefu noted that Tinubu would be engraving his name in the hearts of the Igbo by releasing Kanu, adding that, “the issue of allowing the mater to run its full course in the judiciary is more of playing politics with a critical matter that has put the South East on edge. Since the arrest of Kanu, peace has taken a flight from the region that was adjudged the most peaceful, and the economic activities have taken a downward slide.”
Echefu said many individuals and groups, including Catholic Bishops, have called for Kanu’s unconditional release. “Ohanaeze begged for his release, the Middle Belt Forum has done the same; the Afenifere and the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) have equally spoken in the same direction. So, what is the matter?
“Even though some sections of the country is accusing the President Tinubu of nepotism, this is not what we are talking about now. We are talking about the release of Nnamdi Kanu, and he should give him the same landing he gave to Sowore Omoyele, the leader of #Revolution Now, who was also facing treason charges before an Abuja High Court. The Federal Government last month entered a Nolle Prosequi to discontinue the case, and the mater ended.
“This is the time for the president to demonstrate that Nigeria is his constituency and all the citizens, his constituents, and what is good for the goose is also good for the gander. He should instruct the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice to withdraw the Kanu matter for peace to return to Igbo land so that its economic activities start to thrive again,” Echefu said.
