More than 300 surviving members of the House of Representatives in the third republic are set to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their cohesiveness and abhorrence of military incursion in politics and the emergence of fourth republic.
November 17 marked 30 years the National Assembly legislature was dissolved by the military government of the late Gen Sani Abacha along with other democratic structures in the country.
According to a statement signed by National Publicity Secretary of the Third Republic House of Representatives Forum, Gabriel Eni-Otu, the former legislators said it had become necessary for the surviving members to celebrate themselves adding that of the 593 members sworn in on December 5, 1992, only 300 of them are still living.
The former parliamentarians emphasised the damage military intervention had done to the advancement of democracy pointing out that the country stands to gain more in a democracy.
President Bola Tinubu is expected to be the special guest and the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio as chairman at the event scheduled to be held in Abuja today.
Other dignitaries expected at the event which has as theme: “Use of parliamentarians in office and after office” include Vice President, Kashim Shettima, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Speaker House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, among others.
Also invited are Secretary to the Government of the federation, Senator George Akume, serving and past legislators, traditional rulers, FCT minister, Nyesom Wike, among others.
Other events slated for the day include dinner, award and book presentation.
