The highly anticipated African Launch and Scale Startup Pitch Event culminated in a resounding success, offering a panoramic view of the dynamic entrepreneurial landscape on the continent. Against the backdrop of innovation hubs and burgeoning startups, the event stood as a testament to the remarkable resilience and boundless entrepreneurial spirit that defines Africa’s business ecosystem.  At the helm of the distinguished panel of judges was Sam Ojei, the charismatic and seasoned General Partner of Hux Ventures. Renowned for his keen insights and strategic acumen in the world of venture capital, Sam brought a wealth of experience to the event. As a judge, his role extended beyond evaluation; he became a beacon of inspiration, injecting a perfect blend of humor and wisdom into the proceedings. He spoke about the event and general overview about starts-up

As seasoned venture capitalist, what stood out to you during the pitch event?

Oh, it was like trying to pick a favorite flavor of ice cream – they were all so good! Seriously though, the level of creativity and ambition was off the charts. If I had a dollar for every “revolutionary” and “game-changing” idea pitched, I’d probably start my own unicorn farm.

Can you share any memorable moments from the event?

Well, there was this one pitch where they compared their product to a rocket. I was half expecting it to come with a launchpad and countdown! I love the enthusiasm. And then there was the team that brought snacks – brilliant strategy, by the way. They know the way to a judge’s heart is through their stomach.

What advice do you have for the startups that participated?

First and foremost, never underestimate the power of a good dad joke. Just kidding – but seriously, my advice would be to stay true to your vision, be resilient, and embrace failure like it’s a badge of honor. Remember, every “no” is just one step closer to a “heck yes!”

With so many startups vying for attention, how did you decide on the winners?

It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it, right? I was looking for that spark, that “aha” moment when you realize this team isn’t just thinking outside the box – they’re redesigning the whole darn box. Plus, bonus points for not putting me to sleep. Energy matters!

Were there any pitches that made you raise an eyebrow and go, “Hmm, interesting”?

Absolutely! There was a team that pitched a product for training goldfish. Yes, you heard me right, goldfish! I had to double-check if I was in a startup pitch or an aquarium. It just goes to show, creativity knows no bounds.

You’re known for your wit. Did any of the startups manage to out-joke you during their pitches?

They tried, bless their hearts! I appreciate a good sense of humor. There was this one team that used a GIF of a dancing cat to explain their revenue model. I thought, “If a cat can dance its way to profit, why can’t they?” Points for creativity, but we’re still waiting for the first feline CEO.

What’s your take on the future of startups in Africa?

The future is brighter than a supernova! I’ve seen these startups shoot for the stars, and I have no doubt they’ll land on a few. Africa is a hotbed of innovation, and if these entrepreneurs keep hustling like they did in the pitch room, we’re in for one heck of a success story.
