The suspected killer of a serving corps member, Salome Adaidu, has pleaded not guilty to the charge of culpable homicide punishable by death at a Nasarawa State High Court.

The accused, Timileyin Ajayi, was arraigned on Monday before Justice Simon Aboki of High Court 2, Lafia. Ajayi, who was arrested by the Nasarawa State Police Command on January 12, is accused of murdering and dismembering Salome Adaidu in his residence.

During the court proceedings, the Officer-in-Charge, Legal, of the Nasarawa State Police Command, Stanley Nwaforagu, expressed confidence in the evidence presented against the accused.

He said, “Today, the 27th day of January 2025, the defendant, Mr. Timileyin Ajayi, was properly arraigned before this Honourable Court on one count of culpable homicide punishable with death. His plea was taken, and he pleaded not guilty to the charge. The case has now been adjourned to March 17 and 20 for trial.”

Nwaforagu added, “The court has expressed its willingness to ensure a speedy trial, which is a welcome development. We have overwhelming evidence to sustain the charge, and we are optimistic that justice will be served appropriately.”

Counsel to the defendant, Joseph Tukur, stated his commitment to ensuring that due process is followed during the trial.

“My duty as defense counsel is to ensure the prosecution does its work within the boundaries of the law by proving the case beyond a reasonable doubt. I will diligently follow up on the case to ensure the law takes its course,” Tukur said.

Ajayi is alleged to have invited his girlfriend, Salome Adaidu, to his house, where she was brutally murdered. Following his arrest, he has remained in police custody pending the commencement of the trial.

Justice Aboki has scheduled the trial to continue on March 17 and 20, 2025.
