Starmer appointed by King Charles as UK Prime Minister

By Seyi Babalola

King Charles has welcomed the third Prime Minister during his 22-month reign as Labour secured a decisive victory in the UK general election.

At Buckingham Palace, the 75-year-old monarch greeted Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, extending an invitation to form a new government as prime minister.

Following their audience, the official Court Circular noted that “the Prime Minister kissed hands on appointment,” a ceremonial phrase traditionally indicating acceptance of the role, though typically performed through a handshake.

Subsequently, Sir Keir Starmer proceeded down the Mall to Downing Street, where he addressed the nation for the first time as prime minister.

Earlier in the day, King Charles had a meeting with the outgoing prime minister, Rishi Sunak, who assumed office on October 25, 2022, following Liz Truss’s brief 49-day tenure.

As a constitutional monarch, King Charles abstains from voting and maintains political neutrality.

The State Opening of Parliament and the King’s Speech under the new Labour government is scheduled for Wednesday, July 17.
