St. Savours School, Ikoyi, Lagos has held the second edition of the “Femgineers” programme aimed at increasing the interest of schoolgirls in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The school launched the “Femgineers” programme last year to champion the idea that aptitude in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics knows no gender.

The programme, held last week, with sponsors like The Neya Kalu Foundation and The Sun Publishing Limited, had in attendance 10 participants from Government Junior College, Ikoyi, Lagos, with the theme: “Flights and Forces.”

According to the organisers, “Femgineers” will address the persistent gender gap, especially in underserved communities, which hinders women’s participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.

They emphasised: “In today’s tech-driven world, STEM education is more critical than ever.”

The organisers said that the programme would “ignite a passion for STEM in young women from public schools, exposing them to STEM subjects and career paths, and equipping them with the skills needed to succeed in the future.”

Beyond career guidance, the organisers said, Femgineers is dedicated to fostering creativity, problem-solving, and innovation among participants.

“These essential skills are crucial for success in any field, and the programme seeks to empower girls to approach challenges with confidence and ingenuity,” they said.

With training and activities put together by the Lead Teacher, Mrs. Ofoegbu and the Assisting Teacher, Mr. Gray, Femgineers initiative “will pave the way for a future where girls confidently explore the boundless possibilities within STEM, unhindered by societal limitations,” the organisers said.
