As the race for the speakership of the 10th National Assembly gained momentum, a pro-democracy group, Coalition of Democrats for Equity and Justice (CODEJ), has called on the leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to support the aspiration of an incumbent member of the House of Representatives, Princess Miriam Onuoha, to emerge.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, the Executive Director of Social Services, Dr Frances Attah, expressed confidence that the House of Representatives under her would amplify the voices of the Nigerian people and prioritise their concerns in legislative debates.
In addition, Mbagwu stated that the federal lawmaker has vast experience as a legislator with innate leadership qualities which distinguish him from other aspirants and she has continuously exhibited these qualities over the years as a lawmaker.
Hon Onuoha currently representing the people of Isiala-Mbano-Onuimo and Okigwe Federal constituency of Imo State.
CODEJ appealed to the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to support her election in fulfilment of his campaign promises of promoting inclusiveness.
“For surviving the tsunami in the South East, the APC should reward Hon. Miriam Onuoha for her loyalty, dedication and legislative dexterity and competence and contributions on the floor of the House over the years.
“While using this medium to call on all elected members to rise above political party or ethnic lines to choosing the best person with the right intellectual acumen, intelligence and sound mind for the tough job of Speakership.”
“It is most important to note that, Nigeria and Nigerians deserve a solidly grounded person with an uncommon experience as one of the leading serving Honourables—in human capacity and resource management—to lead the Green Chambers to the next level of greatness and monumental national growth; a woman of untainted credible credentials and selfless altruism of service to the people,” the group added.
Meanwhile, similar support came from the Northern Patriots for National Cohesion, which urged the President-elect, Asiwaju Tinubu, to consider Miriam Onuoha for Speaker of the 10th Assembly.
President of the group, Usman Tijani Abubakar, disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen, on Thursday, in Abuja.
Abubakar said despite the numerous contenders that have thrown their hats into the ring from all regions, Jaji remains the most competent and possesses the diplomatic skills needed of a true democrat.
The group further said Hon. Onuoha would forge friendships across tribal and religious lines, stressing that Jaji exhibits uncommon bravery, and would deliver a roadmap that would ensure a productive Assembly.
