The Sokoto State Government has urged residents to refrain from inflammatory and politicised statements that could undermine efforts to address the state’s security challenges.

Colonel Ahmed Usman (retd), Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, issued this warning in response to recent remarks attributed to Basharu Altine Guyawa.

Col. Usman described Guyawa’s comments, which suggested government negligence on security, as misleading and harmful to the morale of citizens and security operatives. “The issue of security is a collective one. The government alone cannot provide security without the contribution and support of the citizenry,” he said.

He cautioned that sensational narratives risk eroding public support for the government and security agencies. Under Governor Ahmed Aliyu, the state has taken proactive steps, particularly in the eastern region.

“Recently, the government facilitated a joint security operation in the region, which led to the destruction of numerous bandits’ hideouts, the elimination of several criminals, and the rescue of multiple kidnap victims,” Usman noted.

The government has also bolstered security with logistical and financial aid, restoring monthly allowances halted by the previous administration and donating numerous patrol vehicles and motorcycles. Regular forums with security operatives, community leaders, and stakeholders have further reduced attacks, he added.

Ironically, Usman pointed out, Guyawa had praised Aliyu’s efforts in February, presenting him with an award from the Movement for Social Justice in Nigeria. “During the ceremony at the Government House in Sokoto, Guyawa reportedly commended the administration for its interventions and commitment to peace and security,” he said.

Col. Usman stressed the government’s firm stance: “We will not condone any attempt by any individual or group to distract or derail the progress being made in this regard.”
