From Shafa’atu Suleiman, Sokoto

The Director of Budget at the Sokoto State Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, Buhari Umar, has been named the 2024 Most Outstanding Public Administrator of the Year by Champion Newspapers.

The prestigious award, announced earlier this week, celebrates Umar’s outstanding leadership in public finance management, transparency, and effective policy execution, recognising him as one of Nigeria’s leading figures in modern governance.

In a congratulatory statement issued on Sunday, the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr. Abubakar Muhammad Zayana, described the honour as a “well-earned tribute to a man who has made excellence his standard and service his calling.”

He said under Umar’s stewardship, the Sokoto State budgeting process has undergone significant transformation, aligning fiscal strategies with development priorities and improving socio-economic outcomes across the state.

The commissioner acknowledged his discipline and analytical depth, stating that Umar has consistently promoted prudent resource allocation and transparency in public expenditure. “His name now stands tall among the giants who have reshaped the narrative of public service in Nigeria.”

He is known for his calm demeanour under pressure and his ability to deliver measurable results.

His recognition by Champion Newspapers comes at a critical time when state governments across Nigeria are being called upon to enhance financial accountability and drive inclusive growth.

Many observers believe that Umar’s work in Sokoto could serve as a model for other states seeking to strengthen their budgeting systems and better align with national development goals.

The Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning joined other stakeholders in applauding the recognition, describing Umar as “a shining star, a tireless reformer, and an enduring symbol of what it means to serve with honour and integrity.”

The ministry also expressed confidence in Umar’s continued contributions to sustainable development in Sokoto State and beyond.
