In the wake of renewed Boko Haram attacks in parts of northeastern Nigeria, the Chief Whip of the Senate and Senator representing Borno North Senatorial District, Distinguished Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno (Esq.), has moved a motion of urgent national importance, decrying the deteriorating security situation and calling for immediate, strategic government intervention.
The motion, which was presented during Tuesday’s Senate plenary, came in response to recent coordinated attacks by Boko Haram terrorists on communities in Marte, Gajiram, and other areas of Borno and Yobe states. These attacks have left multiple casualties in their wake, including the tragic loss of over twelve Nigerian soldiers in Marte, and have once again plunged communities into fear, displacement, and mourning.
Senator Monguno, who also serves as Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriation, strongly condemned the attacks, describing them as “barbaric and unacceptable acts of terror against innocent citizens and gallant security personnel.”
“The resurgence of Boko Haram activities in our communities has brought unimaginable suffering to the people of Borno and Yobe. The killing of our troops and civilians must not be ignored. This is a national emergency that demands swift and comprehensive action from the highest levels of government,” he declared.
In his motion, Senator Monguno called for a total overhaul of Nigeria’s security architecture, urging the Federal Government to reinforce military operations in the North-East, equip troops with modern technology and logistics, and enhance intelligence gathering. He stressed that security agencies must adopt both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies to combat terrorism and restore lasting peace.
He also advocated for immediate humanitarian support for the victims of the attacks, urging the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relief organizations to mobilize aid to displaced families and affected communities.
The Senate, in unanimous support of the motion, resolved to invite key security agencies to provide a detailed briefing on the security situation in the region and the ongoing counterinsurgency efforts.
Several lawmakers joined Senator Monguno in expressing concern over the escalating insecurity across the country, calling for increased political will, accountability, and collaboration between federal, state, and local authorities.
Senator Monguno reaffirmed his commitment to the people of Borno North and to ensuring that their voices are heard at the highest levels of governance, stating that “no Nigerian deserves to live in fear, and no community should continue to suffer under the siege of terror.”
The motion is expected to serve as a wake-up call to all stakeholders and may mark the beginning of a more aggressive legislative and executive push to address the protracted insurgency in Nigeria’s North-East.
