The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday, May 28, approved the 2024 budget proposal of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) totalling ₦124,289,057,866, following the presentation of the report by Senator Ahmed Abdulhamid Mallam-Madori (Jigawa North East), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs.

The budget, which was adopted by voice vote during plenary presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, is aimed at strengthening the operational and infrastructural capacities of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) in line with national security priorities.

Presenting the report, Senator Mallam-Madori stated that the committee received the 2024 budget proposal from the Senate President’s office on Friday, February 14, and conducted a budget hearing on Wednesday, May 7, during which the Executive Secretary and management of the NPTF defended the proposal and gave an account of the ongoing 2023 budget implementation.

The 2024 budget was sustained in full without adjustments, following extensive deliberations and review.

According to the report, the approved budget is composed of both capital and recurrent expenditures, distributed as follows:

Capital Expenditure: ₦98.64 billion
– NPTF Headquarters – ₦28.03 billion
– Nigeria Police Force – ₦70.61 billion

Recurrent Expenditure: ₦25.65 billion
– Personnel Costs (NPTF) – ₦1.21 billion
– Overhead Costs (NPTF) – ₦8.05 billion
– Overhead (NPF) – ₦16.59 billion

Sources of Funding
The total revenue projection of ₦124.29 billion is expected to be sourced from:
– 0.5% of Total Revenue accrued to the Federation Account – ₦104.01 billion
– 0.5% of Total VAT – ₦18.90 billion
– 0.05% of Net Profits of Nigerian companies – ₦500 million
– Aids, grants, and donations – ₦875.56 million

Senator Mallam-Madori noted that the budget will be channelled towards the training and retraining of police personnel, as well as the construction and rehabilitation of police barracks, stations, and clinics.

It also includes procurement of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles and related infrastructure to modernise police operations.

He further confirmed that the NPTF is currently implementing its 2023 budget and called on the Fund to expedite the rollout of the 2024 budget to address Nigeria’s pressing security challenges.

The Senate adopted the committee’s report and approved the full budget through a voice vote presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Senator Mallam-Madori, on behalf of the committee, expressed appreciation to the Senate leadership for its support and expressed optimism that the approved budget will significantly enhance the Nigeria Police Force’s ability to protect lives and property across the country.
