Newly appointed Deputy National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), South, Senator Ugochukwu Uba, has described the party as the best alternative to deliver the country from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)’s bad governance.

Uba, who represented Anambra South senatorial district of Anambra State in the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly between 2003 and 2007, spoke to journalists over the weekend.

A former director-general and commissioner at different times in Anambra State, including during the SDP administration of the first civilian governor of the state, the late Dr Chukwuemeka Ezeife, the erudite scholar of political science and former senior lecturer at the University of Abuja, condemned what he described as President Bola Tinubu and his party, the APC, plotting to turn the country into a one-party state.

“We in the SDP are committed to salvaging this country from the hardship the people have been experiencing and the disastrous political direction the APC government is taking the country to,” he stated.

Uba said that he would soon embark on a tour of the three geo-political zones in the South, including the South East, South West, and South South, to mobilise and sensitise eminent Nigerians in the area to join the SDP so that the party could take over the federal government in the 2027 general election.

Uba, who also formerly served the nation as a member of the Centre for Democratic Studies (CDS), with the late Professor Omo Omoruyi as the director-general during the military President Ibrahim Babangida’s regime, insisted that Nigeria has an abundance of capable and patriotic leaders who could provide the needed governance to the country.

“You know me; you know my political antecedents. I have decided to embark on this assignment to go round the geo-political zones in the South to sensitise and mobilise like-minded individuals to come into the SDP ahead of the 2027 general election so that we can salvage this country,” Uba stated.

Uba was appointed Deputy National Chairman of the SDP (South) along with two other key national officers of the party, including Dr Sadiq Umar Abubakar, an acclaimed statistician and scholar of international affairs and diplomacy and pioneer national secretary of the SDP between 2010 and 2015, as Deputy National Chairman (North), and Mr Hussain Ado Bello from Kano State in the North West geo-political zone as National Financial Secretary at the party’s NWC meeting presided over by the national chairman, Alh Shehu Musa Gabam.

The NWC, according to the document, was mandated by the National Convention to fill vacant positions in the party’s national leadership with “eminent Nigerian patriots and capable personalities to add value to and strengthen the party” ahead of the 2027 election.

Senator Uba was a member of the Convention Organising Committee and served on the subcommittee on elections that elected the present members of the National Working Committee of the SDP. Uba was also a member of the Presidential Campaign Organisation of the SDP 2022–2023 and served as the Campaign Director of Finance as well as a member of the Party Special Committee on Strategy.
